Are card skins allowed? What banks, stores and ATMs say

A card skin is a sticker you put on a card you own. It does not change your card number, your chip or your stripe, so from the bank's point of view nothing has changed. Here are the practical details.

Banks

We are not aware of any US bank that prohibits a cosmetic skin on the front of a card, and tens of thousands of our customers use them with every major bank and credit union. Your card number stays printed on the back where cashiers and card readers look for it. The chip stays uncovered. The signature strip and security code on the back are untouched.

The one thing a bank does care about is that the card is yours and valid. A skin does not change that.

Stores and restaurants

Cashiers see decorated cards all day. If a store needs to match your card number to a receipt, it is on the back. If they need to see the name, it is on the back too. In practice the only thing that happens at a register is that someone says they like your card.

ATMs, gas pumps and card readers

Thin, flat skins feed through readers normally. Apply yours with the edges pressed down well. If a corner ever lifts, press it back; a lifted edge is the only thing that can catch in a reader.

What a skin is not

A skin is not a card. It has no chip, no stripe and no number, and it cannot be used for payment on its own. It is purely a cover for the card you already have.

Next step

Fits any standard card with the numbers on the back.

Quick answers

Can a store refuse my card because it has a skin on it?
A store can refuse any card for any reason, but a skin leaves the number, chip and stripe intact, so there is no practical reason to. It almost never comes up.
Does a card skin void my card?
No. It is a removable sticker and does not alter the card. Peel it off any time.
Does it cover my name or card number?
On modern cards the name and number are printed on the back. The skin only covers the front.
