How to remove a debit card skin cleanly (and put on a new one)

Card skins are meant to be swapped. When your card expires, or you want a new design, here is how to take the old one off without leaving anything behind.

Peel from a corner, slowly

Lift one corner with a fingernail and pull the skin back on itself at a low angle, like peeling a label. Go slowly. A fast pull is what leaves adhesive behind. The whole thing should come off in one piece in a few seconds.

If it has been on for a long time

After a year or more of heat and wallets, the adhesive can get a little stubborn. Hold the card in your hands for a minute to warm it, or breathe on the corner you are lifting. Warmth softens the glue and it releases cleanly.

If a bit of tackiness is left, rub it off with your thumb or wipe the card with a cloth and a drop of rubbing alcohol. It will not harm the card.

Putting the next one on

Wipe the card so it is clean and dry. Line up the chip window first, then lay the skin down from the chip outward, smoothing with your thumb as you go. Our apply page walks through it in four steps with photos.

Got it crooked? We send a free replacement on the first try. That is our oops-proof guarantee.

Quick answers

Will removing the skin damage my card?
No. The adhesive is made to release cleanly. Peel slowly from a corner and warm the card first if it has been on a long time.
Can I reuse a card skin after removing it?
Not reliably. The adhesive loses grip once lifted. Put a fresh skin on a new card.
What if there is sticky residue?
Rub it with your thumb or wipe with a cloth and a drop of rubbing alcohol. It comes right off.
