Before you buy
Do debit card skins work with tap to pay and chip readers?
Short answer: yes. A card skin is a thin vinyl sticker that goes on the front of your card. Tap to pay, the chip and the stripe all keep working exactly as before. Here is why, part by part.
Tap to pay
Contactless payment uses a small antenna built into the card. The signal passes through plastic, leather, phone cases and wallets, so a vinyl skin a fraction of a millimeter thick does not get in its way. Our customers tap through the skin every day and we have never had a report of it failing.
The only thing that interferes with tap to pay is metal. A metal wallet or a card sleeve with foil lining can block it. A card skin has no metal in it.
The chip
The chip has to touch the reader, so it cannot be covered. Every Kingdom Covers skin has the chip window cut out before it ships. You line the window up with your chip, press the skin down, and the chip stays bare.
If you have a card with the chip in an unusual spot, check our compatibility note on the how-to-apply page before ordering.
The magnetic stripe
The stripe is on the back of the card. The skin goes on the front. Nothing changes for swiping.
ATMs and card readers that pull the card in
Our skins are thin and sit flat, so they feed through ATMs and gas pumps normally. Press the edges down well when you apply it and the card slides like it always has. If an edge ever lifts, press it back down with your thumb.
Quick answers
- Will a card skin block tap to pay?
- No. Tap to pay uses a radio signal that passes through thin vinyl. Only metal blocks it.
- Does the skin cover the chip?
- No. Every skin ships with the chip window already cut out, so the chip stays uncovered.
- Can I use the card at an ATM with a skin on it?
- Yes. The skin is thin and flat. Press the edges down firmly when applying and it feeds through card readers normally.
- Does it work on credit cards too?
- Yes. Debit and credit cards are the same size, and the skin fits any standard card with the numbers on the back.
