1 John 4:19
“We love because he first loved us.”
Where it comes from
John, the disciple Jesus loved, writing in old age to churches about what love is and where it comes from.
What it means
Six words, and the order is everything. Our love for God, for family, for the stranger at the register, is a response, not a starting point. He moved first. If you ever doubt whether you're loved, John points you back to the cross, not to your feelings, and says: look, it started there.
Carry it
A stained-glass window in your wallet, so the light comes through every time you open it.
